Meet Nicola Bradshaw

Herbal medicine and its role in our society is my passion, and has been for over 20 years. I trained as a Medical Herbalist at University of East London and Betonica School of Herbal Medicine in areas such as Clinical skills, Botany, Anatomy & Physiology and Herbal Materia Medica. I am a member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists.

I have worked for 10 years at the head office of Neal's Yard Remedies as a herbal advisor for Customers and staff and now as Tinctures & Herbal Advisor. I support the work of the herbal tincture unit which is situated on 5 acres of Soil Association certified land where fresh herbs are grown and harvested. These are transformed into herbal tinctures for use in health and wellbeing products and dispensed in Neal's Yard Remedies stores. As part of my role I work out formulas, help write & research herbal documentation and all things tincture related. More information on my work at Neal's Yard can be seen here:

I am a trained medical herbalist, registered with NIMH and insured by Balens and currently practice online and in Somerset.

Through professional training, work and travel I have explored the practice of being a herbalist in my kitchen, on site, within varied clinical settings, apothecaries, dispensaries, at Whipps Cross NHS dermatology department & in the fields, festivals, forests and occasional jungle.

I would like to share the herbal knowledge and experience that I have gained and continue to develop to be effectively incorporated into daily life.

I'd also like to encourage that in you.

Previously I trained in Psychology and worked specialising in addiction and harm reduction with sex workers, adults and vulnerable young people which was the making of me - I learnt so much from everyone I worked with. This was when I really began to comprehend the capacity of control we have over our own physical and mental health and how to optimize that no matter how small it may be. After working for a harm reduction project 'Lifeline' in Manchester for several years, I took a sabbatical in Peru working on a children's herbal medicine project and in Cuba with sex workers using a harm reduction approach towards health and wellbeing. The combination of Psychology and Herbal Medicine allowed me to find a rounded approach to physical health & emotional wealth through herbs and other autonomous practices.

Health in its many forms is a right for everyone.

Mental, Emotional & Physical Health is an individual & community responsibility.

What is Herbal Medicine? What can it treat?

Herbal Medicine is accessible for everyone

LEAVES + FLOWERS + ROOTS = MEDICINE

Herbal medicines are plant-based medicines made from differing combinations of plant parts e.g. leaves, flowers or roots. Each part can have different medicinal uses and the many types of chemical constituents require different extraction methods. Both fresh and dried plant matter are used, depending on the herb.

Herbal Medicine is suitable for people of any age, including children and the elderly.

Each patient is treated as an individual – a Medical Herbalist recognises that no two patients are the same.

So many symptoms and areas of health can be addressed including the following:
